Melpomene Katakalos has been a freelance scenic designer, predominately in the San Francisco Bay Area, designing over 90 productions at several theatre companies, educational institutions, and festivals. Her designs have been seen on the stages of the Tony-award winning theatres La Jolla Playhouse and San Francisco Mime Troupe, the critically acclaimed California Shakespeare Theatre, and Cornerstone Theatre in Los Angeles. Specializing in new works, she has designed over 25 world premieres, over 12 west coast premieres, and countless regional premieres. She is a co-founder of Crowded Fire Theater Company, San Francisco. This thirteen year old, award-winning company produces poetic, bold theater created by new and contemporary artists. As a Crowded Fire Associate Artist, Ms. Katakalos helped develop and produce three world premieres as well as many West Coast premieres of new works. She has received many nominations and awards for her designs, including two San Diego Playbill Awards, two Bay Area Critics Circle nominations, and the honor of Best Set Designer for 2008 from The East Bay Express.
Ms. Katakalos received her BFA in Theatrical Production Arts, Concentration in Design from Ithaca College, and her MFA in Scenic Design from UC San Diego. At UCSD, she received the award for Teaching Excellence of Undergraduate Instruction, and has taught at UC Berkeley, Berkeley Repertory School of Theatre, and Sonoma State University. Her teaching interests include combining the art of storytelling with a compelling environment, collaborative processes, and the dynamics between collaborators.
